Newcastle’s family favourite, Massey House Restaurant, has been the Bastas family business for the past 20 years. Opening in 1997, they have witnessed the growth and change in the community, and with their participation behind the scenes, many community events and projects have grown with their assistance.
When Karen and Gus Bastas first took over the Massey House in 1997, the plan was combine their experiences and create something different for the community to enjoy. Balancing work and family has been a goal of the Bastas family. Raising three children and running a restaurant has been a joy, and a dream come true. In 2015, the business won the Consumer’s Choice Restaurant Award from the Metroland Media contest.
After a recent facelift to the storefront, and a complete renovation to expand seating, the updates to the space are exactly what patrons love about the Massey House. Friendly staff and comfortable surroundings are bringing in customers in droves. They have doubled seating, and also provide a meeting space for corporate luncheons and events. The space can now seat 55 people, not offered at any other eatery in Newcastle, Ontario. The separate event room seats 60 and can cater to any special events or corporate needs.
You can’t walk by the door and not be taken in by the aroma of something cooking, as many residents will attest to. Unknown to some is the fantastic Greek menu they prepare fresh on site. With deep family roots, Gus Bastas delivers such delights as Greek Bruschetta, Saganaki, Spanikopita (spinach and cheese in a phyllo pastry) Pitas and Tzatziki.
